Research Evaluation
At Masaryk University, we perceive research evaluation as a part of a broader research culture. We are actively involved in discussions about research evaluation in the Czech Republic and participate in international professional communities. Our evaluation is based on the principles of responsibility and is developed with the same expertise as we would in research.
The Centre for Scientific Support and Evaluation is the central unit at Masaryk University dedicated to research evaluation, bibliometrics, and lecturing activities.
Masaryk University actively participated in developing the Agreement for Reforming Research Assessment and signed the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) in 2022. Responsible research assessment is one of the MU's most important institutional values.
CoARA Action Plan
The members of the International Evaluation Panel (IEP) have been approved by the Czech R&D Council. The on-site visit in the framework of the National Evaluation 2017+ will take place on June 2–6, 2025.
IEP MEMBERS 2025
In 2022, the first Internal Research and Doctoral Studies Evaluation (IRDE) took place, in which all university departments and PhD programmes participated. Find out more about the whole process, aims and goals of the evaluation in the link below.

Since 2020, Performance indicators have been a part of budget allocation for R&D. The indicators are annually revised to ensure that there are no undesirable impacts on individuals and that the indicators are consistent with disciplinary patterns and positively influence publication strategies.

Research Assessment at the Masaryk University
Masaryk University regularly undergoes evaluation at the national level but at the same time develops its own system of research evaluation and funding. This allows us to build on our institutional values and maximize the benefit from the evaluation process towards the uncompromising quality in research. In summary, the national evaluation provides information on various aspects of research quality at the whole university. The faculty level is covered by the system of performance indicators and contract funding, followed by the formative Internal Research and Doctoral Studies Evaluation (IRDE), from which the departments and teams themselves can benefit thanks to direct feedback.
National Research Evaluation
The 2017+ Methodology targets five areas: quality of selected results, publication performance, societal relevance, viability, and university strategy. The results are used by the MEYS to fund HEIs.
Internal Research and Doctoral Studies Evaluation (IRDE)
The purely formative research evaluation, which was held in 2022, is in the form of expert panels based on the principles of responsible evaluation and without the influence on metrics. Faculties use the results for the development of research and doctoral studies and for setting long-term strategies.
Research funding at MU
The R&D budget at MU consists of two components. The Performance indicators reflect generally accepted desirable signs of publication quality through a group of indicators, and the Contract, which supports research strategies of the faculties, also based on the Internal Evaluation.
